Air to air heat pumps
Air to air heat pumps in London
An air to air heat pump is a reversible air conditioner sized to heat your home. It warms the air through wall or ceiling units instead of radiators, and cools in summer. Since 2026 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme lists a £2,500 grant for eligible homes, but an MCS certified installer is required and that route is still opening.

Unit sizes depend on room size, windows, insulation and where the outdoor unit can go. The installer checks all of that in person before giving a fixed price.
You need this when
- You heat a flat with electric storage or panel heaters
- You want cooling in summer and cheaper heating in winter
- There is no room for a hot water cylinder and radiators upgrade
- Your boiler is old and you are weighing up low carbon options
- You live in a flat where a large air to water unit will not fit
Air to air versus air to water
Both types take heat from the outside air. The difference is how they deliver it.
| | Air to air | Air to water | |---|---|---| | Heats | the room air through indoor units | water for radiators or underfloor heating | | Hot water for taps | usually not | yes, through a cylinder | | Cooling | yes | rarely in UK homes | | Needs radiators | no | yes, often larger ones | | BUS grant | £2,500 (eligible homes) | £7,500 |
The Energy Saving Trust notes that air to air systems can suit smaller homes and flats, and that most do not provide hot water, so you will need another way to heat water, such as a cylinder with an immersion heater or an electric shower.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme position in October 2026
This changed in 2026, so check the latest before you sign. The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme page now lists £2,500 towards an air to air heat pump, alongside £7,500 for air to water and ground source. Ofgem's rules say:
- the installer must be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)
- the property must be in England or Wales, and air to air grants are for homes, not non residential buildings
- the new system must replace fossil fuel or electric heating, not another low carbon system
- it must be sized to meet the home's full space heating needs
- new builds (apart from some self builds) and social housing are excluded
The catch is timing. As of 20 October 2026 the Energy Saving Trust says there are no MCS certified installers for air to air heat pumps yet, and MCS expects certification before the end of 2026. Until then, a grant funded air to air install is not possible. You can still pay for one yourself.
Planning: why heating matters
In England, a heat pump can be permitted development under Class G as long as it is not used solely for cooling and meets the size, siting and noise rules. A reversible system installed to heat your home sits much more comfortably within those rules than a cooling only air conditioner. The outdoor unit must still meet the 37 dB(A) noise calculation at your neighbour's window, and flats, listed buildings and street facing walls in conservation areas still need consent.
Is it right for your London home?
Air to air tends to work well in flats heated by electric panel or storage heaters, in small homes, and in houses that want cooling as well as heat. It suits people who are happy with warm air from wall units rather than radiators. It is less suited to large, draughty homes with high heat loss, or households that want one system for heating and hot water. Good insulation and draught proofing help any heat pump. There is not much UK data yet on how air to air systems perform in homes, so ask any installer to explain their running cost estimate for your design.
What affects the price
The cost depends on how many rooms, how much heat each needs, the outdoor unit position, pipe runs and your hot water arrangements. The Energy Saving Trust gives typical figures, and an eligible home may get £2,500 off through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme once MCS certified installers are available.
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Air to air heat pump, one room | about £1,900 (Energy Saving Trust typical figure) |
| Air to air heat pump, three bedroom semi | around £3,700 (Energy Saving Trust typical figure) |
| Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant (eligible homes, MCS installer) | £2,500 off |
| Hot water cylinder or electric shower | quote on survey |

How the job runs
-
We work out how much heat each room needs on a cold day, because a system sized only for summer cooling may not keep you warm in January.
-
We choose indoor units for each room, one outdoor unit position and a plan for hot water, since most air to air systems do not heat water.
-
We explain where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme stands for your home and what planning or freeholder consent is needed.
-
Indoor and outdoor units are fitted, the refrigerant circuit is tested and charged by F-gas qualified engineers, and controls are set up for heating and cooling.

Every price is agreed in writing before work starts.
Start a quoteCan I get a grant for an air to air heat pump?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme lists £2,500 for eligible homes in England and Wales. You need an MCS certified installer, and as of October 2026 the Energy Saving Trust says MCS certification for air to air installers is not yet available.
Does an air to air heat pump give hot water?
Most do not. You will need a separate hot water source, such as a cylinder with an immersion heater, an electric shower or point of use heaters.
Is an air to air heat pump the same as air conditioning?
It uses the same technology as a reversible split air conditioner. The difference is that it is designed and sized to heat the home, not only cool it.
Do I need planning permission?
A heat pump used for heating can be permitted development if it meets every Class G limit, including the noise calculation. Flats, listed buildings and some conservation area positions need consent.
Is VAT charged on air to air heat pumps?
Ofgem says 0% VAT applies to installing energy saving materials, including heat pumps, until 31 March 2027. Ask your installer to confirm how it applies to your system.
